Cycling From Couladère
Overview; Skiing
North: North from Couladère there is a corridor of flat roads that generally run west to north east on either side of the A64 motorway. These are great for recovery rides or relaxing days between mountain rides. To the north west of the A64 corridor lies a network of quiet undulating roads. The main towns in this area include: Le Fousseret; Aurignac and Rieumes. The area is hilly (not usually steep) and picturesque, with many small hamlets and villages. Quiet routes are easy to find. To the north and west the picturesque rolling scenery seems to go on forever with great views of the Pyrénées to the south.
West: Going west from Couladère there are flat roads to Matres Tolosane and Salies du-Salat. From Salies you can reach Col du Larrrieu (704m) and the picturesque town of Aspet. From Aspet you are within striking distance of several serious climbs: Col de Mente (1345m); Col du Portet d'Aspet (1075m); Col des Ares (797m); Col d’Artigascou (1351m); Alternatively on reaching Salies du-Salat heading for the isolated region around Arbas reveals some very quiet roads and stunning countryside. There is a good climb to be found beyond Herran and Fougaron villages. This route is not marked on many road maps. The road here is used by para-ascenders and there is a small pizza restaurant high up on the climb.
East: To the east lies the region known as the Plantaurel Massif an
undulating land of fields and hedgerows. The main towns in the area are:
Montesquieu-Volvestre, Rieux, Carbonne, Lézat sur-Lèze, Le Fossat, Le
Mas d'Azil and Montbrun Bocage. There are many quiet cycling routes, it is
hilly but there are no difficult cols.
South: Heading south from Couladère there are many quiet roads in the Petites Pyrénées. At the centre of the Petites Pyrénées area is a small village called Fabas where there is a small shop and café. Although Fabas is small the best roads for cycling this area radiate out from Fabas into the hills. The climbs in the immediate area go up to just over 500
meters. The Col du Cap Blanc (see picture below) at 519m is typical of the
area. In general even the back roads are in good condition (clean from debris, no pot holes) and although hilly do not very steep gradients. Riding in this area you are never far from the house. Therefore, the area is ideal for training rides or relaxing summer touring. Quiet scenic villages worth visiting include: Asseing; Barjac; Lasserre; St Croix; St Lizier and
Tortouse.
Local cycle routes include: Le Parcours Cyclable du Canal de Garonne (Toulose to Saint Rustice) and L’axe de la Vallée de la Garonne (Toulouse to Luchon). These routes pass through Couladère village and are on either quiet back roads or dedicated cycle paths with a tarmac surface. Note,
the routes are suitable for road or touring bikes, the surfaces are well maintained
tend to follow the Garonne river valley with little or no hills. All routes are clearly marked with signposts and are ideal for riding with children or inexperienced riders.
